This blog has been created by the members of an organization called Spring Valley’s Call 2 Action, or SVC2A. We are a club at Spring Valley High School in Columbia, South Carolina dedicated to the education of others about and the fight against modern slavery and infringements of human rights. Our club was started in 2009 by the AP Human Geography and AP European History classes of Dr. Seiler, a history teacher at Spring Valley High School. We were influenced by the book Half the Sky by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. Half the Sky, which our club highly advises everyone to read, discusses the challenges many women around the world face every day. Kristof and WuDunn discuss the social, cultural, and political causes and effects of various humanitarian abominations such as gender-based discrimination, rape, honor killings, forced prostitution, and more. In SVC2A, we began various charity drives and fundraisers to both raise awareness and provide money to humanitarian organizations such as Girls Learn, UNICEF, Heal Africa, and Equality Now. All we ask of anyone who reads this blog is to become informed about human rights violations both domestic and abroad, to donate and help pull these unfortunate men and women out of the hole of poverty, and to help us end the oppression of people, men, women, and children alike, everywhere.
